I review parts quality for a living. Roughly 200 unique part orders a year, and every one has to pass inspection before it reaches a customer. In 2024, I rejected 11% of first deliveries from new suppliers. Not because the parts were shattered in shipping. Because the details were wrong — wrong surface finish, wrong marking, wrong measurement on a dimension that mattered.

That experience taught me something that might be a little frustrating to hear: there's no universal answer to "what parts should I buy?" The right choice depends on what you're fixing, who you're fixing it for, and how long it has to last.

Scenario 1: you're doing scheduled maintenance

If you're changing parts because the maintenance schedule says so, your main concern isn't peak performance — it's avoiding a repeat job. Nothing hurts like doing a two-hour job with a part that dies at 9,000 miles.

Spark plugs are the clearest example. You don't need to be a mechanic to check your own plugs, and honestly, you should — a plug tells you what's happening inside the engine better than most scan tools, for a fraction of the cost.

How to check a spark plug in about 30 seconds

Pull one plug from a warm (not hot) engine and look at the firing end before you wipe anything off.

  • Tan or light gray deposits — normal combustion. The plug is healthy.
  • Dry black soot — the engine is running rich, the plug is too cold, or you've got weak ignition. Check your air filter and fuel trims.
  • Wet oil on the threads and electrode — oil is getting into the cylinder. That's not a spark plug problem; that's rings or valve seals.
  • White or blistered insulator — the engine is running lean, or the plug is too hot. This one deserves attention before you melt a piston.

Then check the gap with a feeler gauge or a coin-style gap tool — about $4 at any parts store. If the gap is outside spec, the plug may still fire, but expect rough idle and worse fuel economy. If the electrode is rounded or the insulator is cracked, replace it.

Now the unpopular opinion: you almost certainly do not need the most expensive spark plug they sell. You need the right plug for your engine, from a source you can trust. Counterfeit plugs look identical from the outside — and they fail shockingly fast. We got a batch in 2023 that had the right box, right markings, everything. Every single one had the wrong gap tolerance. That shipment cost us time, money, and a very annoyed customer.

Scenario 2: you're fixing something you actually care about — like a 350Z

When you own a performance car, "good enough" stops being good enough. You're not just replacing parts; you're preserving the way the car drives. And suspension components are where this gets serious.

The 350Z upper control arm: what I inspect before approving one

The front upper control arm on a 350Z directly controls camber and caster. When it's worn, the car gets twitchy over bumps and eats tires like they're on sale. Here's what I check when a 350Z control arm lands on my bench:

  • Ball joint play. The stud should rotate with resistance but have zero vertical play. Vertical movement is an instant fail.
  • Bushing bonding. Good bushings are vulcanized to the metal sleeve. Cheap ones are just pressed in — they move under load and ruin your alignment within a few weeks.
  • Material. Factory 350Z arms are aluminum for weight and corrosion resistance. Some aftermarket arms are steel with a flashy coating. Heavier, and they rust at the welds.
  • Markings. Genuine arms have part numbers stamped in specific spots. If the number is there but the font looks "slightly off," I've seen that before. It's usually a counterfeit or a reboxed reject.

And while the suspension is apart, don't forget the rear coil spring insulator. That rubber pad between the spring and the chassis mount looks like a throwaway piece. It's not. It stops creaking, prevents rust where spring meets metal, and keeps the spring seated under compression. I've seen insulators crumble to dust and leave the rear spring barely kissing the mount. That's not a comfort issue — it's a handling and safety issue.

(Side note: I went back and forth on the genuine vs. budget arm question for a while. On paper, the budget arm is 40% cheaper. But the last thing you want is to pay for the job twice — parts plus a fresh alignment. For control arms, my honest answer is: buy the one that's built like the original, not the one that's cheapest. And if a supplier treats your single control arm order like a nuisance, walk away. Today's small order is tomorrow's big project.)

Scenario 3: you're getting paid to make it last

If you install parts for a living — or you're doing a job so big that a comeback would be a disaster — you need more than a part. You need a system you can stand behind.

A clutch is not just a disc. It's a disc plus a pressure plate plus a release bearing, all working together. Replace only the disc and leave the old release bearing?   • Box and parts carry proper date codes and batch numbers — I do not accept repackaged parts without full traceability

How to tell which scenario you're in

Still unsure? Answer these three questions:

  1. Is the part following a service schedule? You're in Scenario 1. Buy the right spec from a seller who has a real brand relationship, check what you can (like reading spark plugs), and don't get upsold into premium parts you don't need.
  2. Does the part influence the way the car sits, turns, and stops? You're in Scenario 2. Buy for the engineering, not the price tag. Verify the details — ball joints, bushings, materials, markings.
  3. Will your labor warranty be on the line when it fails? You're in Scenario 3. Buy the complete system — the Schaeffler LuK clutch kit over mixed components — and inspect every part as if your name were printed on the invoice.

People love simple answers: "always buy OEM" or "aftermarket is just as good." After four years of inspecting parts weekly, I do not believe either one. It depends on the part, the installation, and what the part has to do.

One last thing. Some suppliers treat small orders like they're not worth the paperwork. I've never understood that. The customer ordering one set of spark plugs or a single control arm is often the customer who comes back with a full suspension order — or sends a shop's worth of business your way. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means potential. Buy the right part. Check it like it matters. And choose a supplier who treats your $80 order the same way they'd treat an $18,000 one.
