The question everyone asks is “what’s your best price per part?” The question they should ask is “what’s the total cost to get these parts on my assembly line, on time, with zero defects?”

What “Cheap” Stamping Really Costs

I get this pushback a lot. Yes, even for standard automotive stamping parts like brackets, clips, and flanges, TCO matters. Die wear is predictable only if the supplier maintains their own tooling properly. A low-price vendor might use lower-grade steel in their dies, causing inconsistent part quality after 10,000 strokes. Suddenly you’re ordering replacement dies sooner, paying for re-qualification, and risking production stops. That’s not a hypothetical—it happened to one of our clients in 2023, and they spent $8,300 on emergency re-tooling after trying to save $1,200 upfront.

In automotive stamping, the part price is just the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface: die amortization, setup fees, rush premiums, quality risk, logistics (especially for heavy or bulky parts), and the cost of production downtime if something goes wrong. Our company lost a $14,000 contract in 2022 because we tried to save $400 on standard stamping die maintenance. The consequence: the die cracked during a 50,000-piece run, and the client went with a more proactive supplier. That’s when we implemented our “20% TCO buffer” policy—always add 20% to the quoted unit price to account for hidden costs, and only compare vendors after that adjustment.
