Is paying for rush tooling worth the extra cost?

Sometimes. The real value of a guaranteed delivery date isn't the speed—it's the certainty. When a customer has a production launch or an OEM audit deadline, paying extra for a confirmed slot can be cheaper than the cost of waiting. We quote rush premiums on a case-by-case basis. I've seen customers pay 25% more for rush tooling and still save money because they avoided a line shutdown. I've also seen a rush order fail because the specification wasn't finalized. The premium didn't fix that.

Look at total cost, not just the quote. Setup fees, material certificates, and first article inspection all add up. The lowest quote is rarely the lowest total cost when you include rework and downtime. I tell customers: decide which dates are absolute, and pay for certainty only on those.
